What is a DV4 file?
A .dv4 file is the proprietary recording and export format of Bosch Security Systems CCTV equipment — the Divar digital video recorders and the BVMS (Bosch Video Management System) software family. When an operator exports surveillance footage from a Bosch recorder, for example to hand an incident clip to police or to review it off-site, the clip is saved with the .dv4 extension. It is a binary video container, but a closed one: there is no public specification, and the codec and timestamps are wrapped so they can only be decoded correctly by Bosch's own software.
That closed design is deliberate. That is why a folder of exported surveillance video usually contains an .exe alongside the recordings: the recipient runs the bundled player and opens the .dv4 from there. If the export arrived without the player, the current Bosch Video Client can be downloaded from Bosch Security directly.
What a DV4 clip carries
Although the exact byte layout is not public, the contents are well understood in function. A .dv4 holds the encoded surveillance video stream (one or more camera channels), the timestamp and camera-identity metadata needed to present each frame with its date, time and channel, and the integrity data used to authenticate the footage as unmodified. That last part is the point of a closed format in a security context: an exported clip should be demonstrably the same footage the recorder captured, which is hard to guarantee if the video is a plain, freely re-encodable file.
Converting a DV4 to MP4 or WMV
The reliable path to a file that plays anywhere runs through Bosch's own player, not a third-party converter. Open the .dv4 in a recent Bosch Archive Player or Bosch Video Client and use its Export function to save the clip as MP4 or WMV, both of which any media player opens. There is no dependable standalone .dv4-to-MP4 converter for genuine Bosch exports, because the source codec is proprietary; tools that claim otherwise generally cannot decode a real Bosch clip. If you specifically need another format such as AVI, export to MP4 first from the Bosch player, then re-encode that MP4 with HandBrake or ffmpeg as a second step.
